When it came time to plan their wedding, they approached the process the same way they approach life—by choosing experiences that felt authentic rather than following tradition.
The couple fell in love with the lush tropical landscape of Secrets Playa Mujeres and wanted their wedding design to complement the beauty already surrounding them.
"We wanted the décor to elevate the natural setting rather than compete with it," Sarah-Jane explains.
The result was a sophisticated palette of emerald green, black, and gold, creating a bold and elegant atmosphere that blended seamlessly with the vibrant Mexican landscape.
Bringing Tropical Luxury to Life
Over 18 months of planning, Sarah-Jane worked closely with the couple to create a wedding that felt modern, tropical, and distinctly different from the traditional wedding aesthetic.
One thing was clear from the beginning: roses, hydrangeas, and conventional floral arrangements were off the table.
Instead, the design embraced lush greenery, tropical textures, and unique floral elements that celebrated the destination itself.
Every event throughout the wedding weekend took place outdoors, allowing guests to fully experience the beauty of Mexico while immersing themselves in the couple's carefully curated vision.
The Show-Stopping Reception Design
While every detail was thoughtfully planned, one design feature became the undeniable centerpiece of the celebration.
Suspended above the reception tables were breathtaking upside-down calla lily centerpieces, creating an elevated floral installation that immediately captured guests' attention.
The dramatic hanging arrangements added movement, elegance, and a touch of artistic flair while maintaining the tropical sophistication the couple envisioned.
"It was beautiful, unexpected, and definitely created a wow factor," Sarah-Jane says.
Combined with black and gold accents, luxurious linens, and custom lounge areas, the design transformed the outdoor reception into an intimate destination wedding experience unlike any other.
Planning for Oceanfront Challenges
As every experienced destination wedding planner knows, beachfront celebrations come with unique logistical considerations.
The stunning ocean views at Secrets Playa Mujeres also meant strong coastal winds throughout setup and the event itself.
To ensure every detail remained flawless, Sarah-Jane and her team spent four to five hours carefully securing décor elements before guests arrived.
Centerpieces were weighted to withstand ocean breezes, escort cards were discreetly secured to linens, and furniture placement was strategically planned to maximize both comfort and aesthetics.
One particularly creative design feature involved the ceremony seating. Elegant couches were placed in the front row for the ceremony before being repurposed as part of a personalized black-and-gold lounge area during the reception, maximizing both functionality and style.
When the Party Is Too Good
One of the most memorable challenges of the evening wasn't weather-related—it was keeping guests on schedule.
As cocktail hour unfolded against the backdrop of breathtaking ocean views, guests became so immersed in conversation, cocktails, and the overall atmosphere that no one wanted to sit down for dinner.
After multiple announcements and personal invitations to be seated, Sarah-Jane and her team temporarily paused the music and closed the bars to gently encourage guests toward the reception space.
The solution worked perfectly, and dinner service began without sacrificing the fun energy that made the evening so special.
In many ways, it was the best kind of challenge a planner can face—guests enjoying themselves so much they didn't want the celebration to pause.
Going Above and Beyond for Every Couple
One lesson Sarah-Jane took away from the experience was the importance of meticulous inventory management, especially when working in destination locations.
Despite detailed planning, a few personal items were accidentally left behind after the wedding, including the couple's audio guest book.
Rather than leaving the matter unresolved, Sarah-Jane personally retrieved the item during a return trip to Mexico three months later and reunited it with the couple.
