Beyond the Booths: How IBTM Americas 2026 Opened New Doors for ABC Wedding Professionals
Three ABC members. One international experience. Countless opportunities for professional growth.
What happens when wedding professionals step beyond their familiar markets, meet suppliers from around the world, and discover possibilities they hadn't previously considered?
For Association of Bridal Consultants members Tiana Bailey and Casey Pittman, attending IBTM Americas 2026 in Mexico City was much more than another industry conference. It was an opportunity to build meaningful relationships, explore new destinations, and discover new directions for their businesses.
On the latest episode of ABC Weddings Unveiled, ABC President Veronica Foster sat down with Tiana and Casey to hear about their experiences as first-time attendees and how this international event is already influencing their professional journeys.
Their stories offer a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest opportunities begin when we step outside our comfort zones.
What Is IBTM Americas?
Held annually in Mexico City, IBTM Americas brings together professionals from across the meetings, incentives, conferences, events, hospitality, and travel industries.
Unlike traditional wedding conferences, IBTM Americas offers an international marketplace where buyers can connect directly with hotels, resorts, destination management companies (DMCs), tourism representatives, and other industry suppliers.
For wedding professionals interested in destination celebrations, group travel, corporate events, and luxury experiences, these connections can open entirely new avenues for business growth.
Through ABC's international relationships, including ABC LATAM, selected ABC members have had opportunities to participate in this event as hosted buyers.
As Veronica explained during the podcast, ABC LATAM supports selected members with travel, accommodations, and conference registration, creating access to an experience that might otherwise be out of reach.
But the real value goes far beyond attending the event.
It's what professionals do with the opportunity.
A Conference Experience Unlike Any Other
Both Tiana and Casey described arriving at IBTM Americas without fully understanding just how extensive the event would be.
The convention space was enormous, filled with elaborate destination exhibits, international suppliers, and scheduled business appointments.
Their days began early, with transportation to the convention center, breakfast presentations, and a full schedule of supplier meetings.
As hosted buyers, attendees also had access to dedicated spaces where they could work, network, or take a moment between appointments.
And the exhibits themselves were an experience.
Tiana was particularly impressed by Peru's elaborate two-level exhibit, while Casey remembered the colorful presentations from Colombia and the Riviera Maya, complete with regional food, beverages, and cultural experiences.
These weren't simply booths displaying brochures.
They were immersive introductions to destinations, designed to help buyers experience the culture, hospitality, and possibilities each region could offer their clients.
For wedding professionals, that kind of firsthand exposure can be invaluable.
Being Strategic About the Opportunities
One of the most interesting differences between Tiana and Casey was how they approached their supplier appointments.
Tiana arrived with a clear strategy.
Having been in the wedding industry since 2014, she was restructuring her business to focus more intentionally on destination weddings and corporate events.
Rather than attempting to work with every destination, she wanted to develop stronger expertise in specific markets, particularly Mexico.
She spent approximately three weeks researching suppliers and planning her appointments around her business goals.
Her message to other professionals was simple:
Be strategic.
Attending an international trade show should never be viewed simply as an opportunity for complimentary travel. It's an investment in your professional future.
Casey approached the experience differently.
With fewer expectations about the event, she initially scheduled appointments with suppliers and destinations that interested her.
After attending, she realized how much more she could gain by researching exhibitors and prioritizing the relationships most relevant to her business.
Both approaches provided valuable lessons.
Preparation matters, but so does remaining flexible enough to recognize unexpected opportunities.
Discovering New Destinations and Experiences
For both guests, one of the biggest benefits of IBTM Americas was discovering suppliers and properties they might never have considered otherwise.
Tiana shared her interest in Rancho La Puerta, a wellness-focused resort in Mexico, as well as Millennium Hotels and connections that could support her growing corporate events business.
She also discussed how a connection made at IBTM Americas led her to consider Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas for an upcoming corporate program.
Casey highlighted several properties and hospitality connections, including Impression, Peter's Island, and Hilton.
For Casey, whose travel business had primarily focused on Sandals and Beaches Resorts, the experience introduced opportunities to serve clients interested in destinations and experiences beyond the Caribbean.
Perhaps most importantly, she now has personal connections with representatives who can help answer questions, explore client requests, and build stronger partnerships.
That personal connection changes the conversation.
Instead of simply researching a resort online, a planner can reach out to someone they have met, explain a client's vision, and begin building a customized experience.

An inside look at the destinations, exhibits, international connections, and memorable moments experienced by ABC members in Mexico City.
ABC members experienced international networking, destination discovery, and new business opportunities during IBTM Americas 2026 in Mexico City.
The Power of ABC's International Network
While the supplier meetings were valuable, one of the most meaningful parts of the conversation centered on relationships.
Casey shared how ABC leadership helped connect her with other professionals already attending the conference.
Through introductions arranged by Nicole Zillman, she met industry colleagues who helped her navigate the event, introduced her to additional suppliers, and welcomed her into their professional circles.
Those introductions created connections that continued beyond the conference floor.
Tiana also spoke about how ABC membership has introduced her to opportunities she might not otherwise have discovered, including invitations to additional international industry events.
This is an important part of what ABC strives to provide its members.
Professional networking isn't simply about exchanging business cards.
It's about building relationships that create access, share knowledge, and support long-term growth.
And through ABC USA, ABC LATAM, and ABC Asia, those opportunities can extend well beyond national borders.
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome
One of the most relatable moments in the podcast came when both guests spoke about feeling intimidated.
Surrounded by experienced international meeting planners and corporate event professionals, Tiana initially questioned whether she belonged in the room.
Although she had years of wedding planning experience, she was still developing the corporate side of her business.
Casey experienced similar feelings as she traveled to Mexico and entered an unfamiliar professional environment.
Yet both discovered something important.
They didn't need to have all the answers or be the most experienced people in the room to benefit from being there.
Their existing knowledge, professional experience, and willingness to learn were enough to begin meaningful conversations.
For wedding professionals who hesitate to attend larger conferences, apply for leadership opportunities, or enter new markets, their advice is worth remembering.
Don't allow the feeling that you're not ready to keep you from an opportunity that could help you grow.
The Follow-Up Is Where Opportunities Become Business
Attending a conference is only the beginning.
Both Tiana and Casey emphasized the importance of following up with the suppliers and professionals they met.
Tiana returned home and began sending emails to her new contacts, exploring familiarization trips, and evaluating potential partnerships.
Casey reflected on the importance of exchanging contact information, collecting resources, and following up even when suppliers promise to send materials afterward.
They also encouraged attendees not to limit themselves to scheduled appointments.
Sometimes a brief conversation at an open booth can lead to a valuable new relationship.
The lesson?
Don't measure the success of a conference by how many business cards you collect.
Measure it by the relationships you develop and the opportunities you pursue afterward.
What Wedding Professionals Can Learn from Their Experience
Whether you're considering IBTM Americas or another international industry event, Tiana and Casey's experiences offer several valuable lessons:
1. Know your business goals before you attend. Identify the destinations, suppliers, and opportunities that align with where you want your business to grow.
2. Research your appointments. Prioritize the people and companies that can help you serve your ideal clients.
3. Leave room for discovery. Some of the best opportunities may come from conversations you didn't schedule.
4. Build relationships with other attendees. Fellow planners and industry professionals can become valuable resources and referral partners.
5. Follow up intentionally. A meaningful relationship requires more than one conversation.
6. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Growth often begins when you enter unfamiliar spaces.
More Than Membership: Creating Opportunities for Growth
At the Association of Bridal Consultants, we believe that professional development should go beyond the classroom.
Education provides the foundation, but real-world experiences, industry relationships, and exposure to new markets help professionals turn knowledge into opportunity.
The experiences Tiana and Casey shared demonstrate the importance of ABC's four pillars:
Education: Learning directly from destinations, hospitality partners, and international industry professionals.
Advocacy: Helping wedding professionals gain recognition and access within the broader events and hospitality industries.
Revenue: Discovering new business opportunities through destination weddings, corporate events, group travel, and supplier partnerships.
Networking: Building meaningful professional relationships across countries, cultures, and industry sectors.
For Tiana and Casey, IBTM Americas wasn't simply another event on the calendar.
It was an opportunity to imagine what comes next.
And that's exactly the kind of professional growth ABC wants to encourage.
